Tips for Berlin

Where to stay

We recommend staying in the central or eastern parts of Berlin (Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg, Friedrichshain (our neighborhood), or Kreuzberg). Berlin has many options for and styles of accommodations, and we are happy to consult if you need any advice. If air conditioning is important, you’ll want to check hotels more closely.

Things to do

Reichstag Dome

Explore the parliament building. During the tour, you can ascend the glass dome and get a nice view of the city. Visiting the dome is free but you need to book your times well in advance (we would recommend a couple of weeks!). The Brandenburg Gate and Holocaust memorials are in the area. You can also walk around Tiergarten and stop by the Biergarten at Cafe am Neuen See. A nearby alternative and somewhat close-by option to get a view of the city is the Siegessäule (4 Euro cover charge, no reservation possible).

Day trip to Potsdam / Sanssouci Palace

Take the S-Bahn or regional train out to Potsdam, where you can explore the small city and visit the summer palace of Frederick the Great (Sanssouci).

Lake day

Spending the day at a lake is a popular way to beat the heat in Berlin. There are a lot of them around Berlin. Here is an article detailing some popular destinations and what you can expect. People are a bit more comfortable with nude bathing in the former East.

Learn more about the East German surveillance state

Visit the headquarters of the former East German State Security Service (Stasi). You’ll explore their headquarters and learn about their widespread surveillance of the East German population. Stasi Museum

Travel and Transit

Getting to Berlin

Dust off those passports and check their validity! Americans do not need a visa to enter Germany. Berlin has one airport (Berlin Brandenburg Airport – BER), which is zone C of the public transit system.

Getting around Berlin

Uber, Bolt, and Freenow are the main app-based taxi services operating in Berlin.

The BVG, Berlin’s transit service, is a great way to get around. They have a range of ticket options. Get a day ticket if you will take the public transit for more than 3 rides in a day.

  • There are reduced tickets for 6-14 year olds (excluding 7-day tickets).
  • There is no tapping in and out of transit. Security is sent around to check tickets in trains, etc. If you get tickets on the platform, you need to validate them at a small stamping machine near the ticketing machine. They won’t hesitate to fine you.

Paying Locally

Germany, and particularly Berlin, can be a bit old fashioned when it comes to payments. It’s more common for restaurants or cafes to accept only cash. Keep some cash on hand. If you have a major national bank (e.g. Bank of America, etc.), it might be part of a global ATM alliance, which means you could get cash out with less fees at a Deutsche Bank.

Frequently asked questions

F A Q

Is there a dresscode?

Summer best– think sunny silhouettes, funky fits, linen looks, and colorful clothing. No shorts at the ceremony, please!

What will the weather be like this time of year?

European summers have tended to be hotter as of late, with temperatures floating somewhere in the 80s (30°C). We will try to send an update once we know what summer 2024 is shaping up to be. Berlin is not well air conditioned, so you’ll want to stay hydrated and wear breathable clothing if it turns out to be hot.

Can I take pictures of the wedding and post them on social media?

You can take pictures, but please no tagging the venue and no wider circulation. Most of you have heard the story, but it took some convincing to get the venue and the owners aren’t keen on the venue being associated with weddings.

Is there a wish list for wedding gifts?

We’re happy if you make the trek to be with us, so no need to worry about a gift. Compliments are always accepted. If you absolutely wish to give a gift, we ask you to donate in our names.
